Gaafary is an Egyptian painter whose practice explores the expressive potential of color, gesture, and layered surface. Working primarily in painting, his composition reflects a sustained investigation into abstraction as a means of conveying psychological depth and lived experience. Through textured compositions and nuanced tonal contrasts, Gaafary constructs visual fields that oscillate between spontaneity and careful orchestration.
Born in Cairo, where he currently lives and works, Gaafary received his Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems in 2008 from the Higher Institute of Advanced Studies. Between 2005 and 2007, he attended evening classes in the Painting Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University. After graduating as an Information Systems engineer, he chose to leave engineering behind to pursue his path as an independent visual artist.
He has participated in numerous solo and collaborative exhibitions, notably Prelude, No Signal , Nabokov Signs, the TRIO Biennale in 2018, Alienation Project at the Palace of Arts, Cairo Opera House in 2017, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Biennale for the Artist’s Book. He also screened his short film In Nothing in Oslo, Norway.
Gaafary’s works have been included in sales at Christie’s in London and Dubai. He has served as Executive Commissar of the Cairo Salon and as Commissar for the Young Artists Competition, Fine Arts Society.
